On Seeing and Looking
When we are in nature we see the sky and the clouds.
We see the blue, the white — as the song goes — and
the green in the landscape.
We see these things because they are there and they register
in our field of vision.
Because we see so much brains have to process a massive volume of visual sensory stimulation in order to find meaning from that
which is most important.
To appreciate the detail, the intricacies, the beauty unfolding, the beneficial and the dangerous we have to be selective;
we have to look.
